Frequently asked questions
How do I prepare for the Open Call?
- Have up to 3 finished artworks to bring in person. Know each artwork's title, year created, dimensions and price. Be ready to describe your process, inspiration and themes to the Selection Committee.
- Arrive within 30 minutes of the 11:00 AM start time to be eligible. This is a one-day opportunity with no make-up days. If you need to send a trusted relative or friend in your place, contact Kiersten Fellrath, Project Coordinator.
- No payments for artwork are made on the day of the Open Call.
What is required of me, as an artist?
- Submit a W9 form to get set up in the State's payment system. The form asks for a permanent or mailing address, your SSN and other details. Bring a voided check if you'd like direct deposit to your bank account (optional).
- You'll sign a formal acquisition contract with the State of New Mexico and Nambé Pueblo.
- Frame 2-dimensional artwork in a wood frame behind Plexiglas. For 3-dimensional artwork, create a vitrine and pedestal if the site doesn't already have display cases. Include these costs in your artwork's price.
- Create a plaque with "about the artwork" information.
- The Project Coordinator has a list of local artist resources for framing, plaque making and more.
If selected, how long does the purchase process take?
- Artists are paid with public funds through the State of New Mexico's Department of Cultural Affairs. Many checks and balances make sure these funds are spent properly, so the process can take anywhere from 90 days to six months.
- It goes faster when paperwork is filled out correctly and contracts are signed quickly.
- 50% of the payment is available once the contract is finalized, before the artwork is installed, to help with framing and display costs.
Who is eligible for this opportunity?
- All artists and craftspeople whose artwork can be displayed permanently for many years to come.
- Family members representing an artist's estate may submit that family member's artwork.
- Teen artists (under 18) may submit artwork with a parent or guardian acting as their representative for the contract. Bring your parent or guardian to the Open Call.
